H-3: Destruction of Culture or Public Traffic Reliever

The Final Verdict

Over the final decision to use the TH-3, H-3 and a later T-3 alternative, the final decision was voted on a four laned highway labeled “H-3”. The other alternative T-3 was very short lived. Once construction started one major building problem revealed itself. During heavy rainy seasons the Ko’olau Mountains absorbed water that collected in the rocks, these are called “dikes”. Drilling through a dike would open all the water stored in it probably drowning all workers inside the tunnel. As a precaution, an exploratory tunnel was drilled. The exploratory tunnel was deemed safe and drilling commenced. No dikes were broken as a result of drilling. In regard to the OMEGA station it remained planned and was built during construction of the H-3. Fortunately the OMEGA station was never fully built. The mostly empty facility can be seen today on the Windward end of the now named Tetsuo Harano Tunnels. With all the issues like archeological sites, plants and animals, and the OMEGA station construction was very careful with plants and animals. Archeological sites were avoided whenever necessary and the OMEGA station not fully completed. (all info collected by the "Modern Marvels" show on History Channel)
